Summer Home Maintenance Tips

When the days become longer, and the weather gets warmer, that means its summertime! The summer evokes a sense of warmth, relaxation and vibrant energy that invites us back to the outdoors and creates lasting memories for everyone.  Between backyard barbecues, blooming gardens, summer vacations, and everything else this wonderful season brings, be sure to keep an eye on your home maintenance! Check out our summer maintenance checklist to ensure that your home stays in tip-top shape.

Check your air conditioner

As you’re running the air conditioner due to the record highs, make sure you clear out any dirt or debris that may have built up on the off season. Over the fall and winter months, air conditions are often not used leading to build up which can obstruct airflow. Not only can this affect the performance of the AC unit, but it can also increase energy consumption!

Start by removing visible dirt or debris from the unit’s exterior and carefully clean fins and coils and replace the air filters if needed. Make sure that any work you do on your air conditioner is following your manufacturer instructions! A simple cleaning can ensure that your home stays cool and comfortable throughout the summer and reduces the chance of long term damage.

Monthly Maintenance:

Lubricate Your Garage Door Tracks:

  • After the dry winter, it’s important to lubricate the tracks on your garage door to ensure smooth operation.
  • Use a silicone-based lubricant, which is ideal for maintaining optimal performance and preventing wear and tear.

Change and Test Detector Batteries:

  • Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are functioning properly.
  • Test each detector to confirm they are working correctly, providing safety and peace of mind for your home.

Replace or Clean Your Furnace Air Filter:

  • Regularly replacing or cleaning your furnace air filter improves air quality and maintains efficient airflow.

Clean Your Hood Range Filter:

  • A clean hood range filter enhances kitchen ventilation and prevents grease buildup, which can be a fire hazard.
  • Remove the filter and wash it with warm, soapy water, or replace it if it is too dirty or damaged.

Don’t forget to give your garden some attention as well!

Maintain Your Lawn & Garden:

  • Mow Regularly: Keep your lawn healthy and looking its best by mowing it regularly.
  • Trim Bushes and Trees: Prevent damage to your house by trimming bushes and trees away from the structure.
  • Mulch Garden Beds: Add a layer of mulch to garden beds to suppress weeds and help the soil retain moisture.
  • Water Consistently: Ensure plants and flowers receive adequate water, especially during hot weather, to keep them thriving.
