Fire Prevention Week: Home Safety Checklist
October 5 to 11 is Fire Prevention Week in Canada, and the Calgary Fire Department is reminding Calgarians about the importance of fire safety in the home. According to the City of Calgary, Kitchen fires and cooking are the leading cause of injury in the home, and with Thanksgiving coming up this weekend, it’s important you’re aware of any possible hazards in your home. For a full fire safety audit, here’s a checklist for every room in your home.
Detectors
- You have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home
- You test your detectors monthly
- Detectors over ten years old are replaced
Kitchen
- Cooking is never left unattended
- Check for worn or cracked electrical cords on appliances
- Small appliances not being used are left unplugged
Living Room
- Gas appliances/fireplaces are inspected annually
- Electrical outlets are not overloaded
- Wires or cords do not run under carpets or rugs
Bedrooms
- Lamps are clear of fabrics or anything that can overheat or catch fire
- Bedroom doors are closed at night
- Windows open easily
Basement
- Furnace and hot water tank are clear of combustibles or obstructions
- Electrical panel is free of obstructions
Garage
- Gasoline isn’t stored in garage
- Garage is kept clear of sawdust or wood shavings
- Cars are not left idling in garage
